National Cup Recap
The semi finals and finals for the 2007 National Cup took place from August 3-5 at the Starfire  Sports comples in Tukwila, WA (Outside Seattle).
After winning the Region 1 finals, two of our teams earned the right to play in this tournament.

On Friday Aug 3rd:
NYMWSL "30 plus" beat Southern California  1-0 and advanced to the Over 30 final.
NYAC beat San Francisco 3-0 and advanced to the Amateur Final.

On Sunday August 5th:
NYMWSL "30 Plus" beat St. Louis 4-1 and became the National Cup Champion in the over 30 division.
NYAC beat North Carolina  4-2 and became the National Cup Champion in the Amateur Division.

This was quite a historic weekend not only for our League, but also for Eastern NY State.
No one in our League has ever won a National Cup before and while a couple of teams (Long Island and Bronx) won the Amateur cup in the 80's, no two ENY women's teams have won in the same year.  So having two National Champions  in two different divisions on the same year is HUGE!

CONGRATULATIONS  to the NYAC and "30 plus" teams.

Letter from the National Cup Commissioner - Region 1:

August 12, 2007

Region I National Cups: Final Report

To: USASA, Region I Executive Committee, the Region I members, our teams, and the Region I Fans:

Thank you to all of you for your support throughout the USASA National Cup Competition. In Region I, the Region of dreamers, and now the Region of achievers, we worked hard to manage a fair and competitive game inclusive to breaking 15 records.   Though hectic at times, the cooperation of all involved helped to keep the games on track in order to find our strongest teams to compete in Washington. The Region I top teams competed for the 2007 USASA National title in eight different cups in Seattle, WA., August 3-5, 2007. The results were stunning. Our teams   set the marks of a new era.

From last September, through recently , more than 400 teams fought for the right to be in Washington. While some were unlucky and others fell short the last minute of the game, four of our eight teams managed to take advantage of the opportunity and became the best in the nation. Four of our best became the USASA’s best   while all of our teams did not neglect to display emotion, intensity and character. Pumping in goals, protecting their own net and gutting out victories, National champions emerged. Region I was well represented by teams from a variety of states. Teams from CT, DC/VA, E-NY, MA, and MD. They all faced off against Region IV at the semifinals on Friday. Both regions split the victories while all the semifinalists of Region I managed to win four National titles.

Our coaches and our players prevailed and they deserve all the credit in the world. I was fortunate to witness their success. I am thrilled, honored and proud of every one that was a part of the 2006-07 Region I success. With your support, I am confident that we will improve and be able to continue setting new horizons and breaking our own records for years to come. Rest assure, the Region I cups sub-Committee will set a new policy in order to improve our Cups. If approved by the Executive Committee, all proposals will be implemented for the 2007-2008 season effective immediately. It is now evident that our Region is made of Champions. Together we can build on this for years to come.

Congratulations to all the teams who were unfortunate not to qualify during the Regional Competition. I am proud for the way you competed and helped to present the highest level of Soccer in USASA. In my opinion, you did not loose. You created champions. Your competition gave birth to a new era.

To the player of NY Athletic club who broke her nose and said to her coach: “I want to play, I can help my team win this”, you are an inspiration to all of us.

To all the players who worked the hardest to accomplish their dreams. You were the historians of our Region and now you have become a National pioneer.

To the players that are still searching for glory, it is not important how fast you go down, it’s important how fast you get up.

To the UGH and the Ukrainian Nationals clubs, thank you for providing the fields to host our Regional Championships. The fields where National Champions were born.

To my State/League Commissioners, the people responsible for starting it all back in September. Great kick-off, thank you for all your work.

To the Region I Executive Committee, thank you for all of your support.

To the USASA National Cups Chairman, Werner Fricker jr., thank you for your leadership and support.

To our Presidents and State/League Committees, thank you for all your work.

To the Region I Board of Directors, thank you for all your efforts, support and understanding, and please do not consider these results an accomplishment of you drilling me for 2-1/2 hours at the last meeting. These results were accomplished because we were all a part of the hard work.

To the RRA, John Zagrilli, thank you for all the hard work and efforts.

To the Referees that called all our games, thank you for all your efforts

For the USASA’s and Region I’s National Champions, all the Region I participant teams in 2006/07 National Cups, and the huge army behind them.
